Matea Leš, author of *Jadran*, selects seaside spots for *The Host*

Matea Leš has recommended three oceanfront spots for The Host.

Born on the Croatian coast, Matea grew up enjoying a peaceful life, lulled by the Adriatic Sea. At age 12, her first travels revealed to her the joy of discovering new places. And they also helped her realize something essential: no matter where she goes, the sea will always be her home. As the author of the book *Jadran: Snapshots of Belonging*, she recounts, through her words and images, the deep bond that connects her to her homeland and the Adriatic Sea.

Montenegro

“Here, in this little corner of paradise, you’re welcomed by Bogdan and Milica, your hosts, with the warmest smiles and a glass of homemade schnapps. Otto, the dog, greets you too. You dine on the most delicious local dishes under the orange tree, accompanied by far too many glasses of wine. You’re surrounded by nature and the sound of peace. In the morning, Milica teaches you how to prepare fresh fish for lunch, as well as a traditional way to make the side dishes. Then you eat together under the pomegranate tree, sipping limoncello between bites. Your soul is rejuvenated, and you don’t want to leave.”

Sicily / Italy

“It’s hard not to be inspired by this place. Tonnara di Scopello is one of the most beautiful getaways I’ve ever experienced. The location, the atmosphere, the Italian laid-back vibe, the sea, the small private beach, the food, the people… every detail comes together to set the tone for this place, making for a few magical days I’ll never forget.”

“This Airbnb find will forever remain one of my favorite places I’ve ever discovered. To get there, you have to drive up the hill on a rather treacherous road, then carry your luggage on your back as you walk through the water to reach the house. But once you arrive, the reward is immense. At night, you fall asleep to the sound of the waves crashing against the house. In the morning, you put the coffee maker on, and while the coffee is brewing, you go for a dip in the ocean. It’s absolutely wonderful—I’ve never experienced anything like it.”
